I know, my frequency on this (especially eZ components) related stuff was quite high in the past weeks and having all those posts ending up in my "PHP" feed was maybe a bit too much. Therefore, all eZ related posts will now be marked by the new "eZ" category and when I consider the post important for other categories (like "PHP" or "Community related"), I will add those additionally. - Software patents in Europe My friend Zak remindes us, that this topic is still dangerous, so keep eyes and ears open! The devil is not banned, yet... - Back from Norway Norway is a somewhat strange country. When I got there - 2 weeks ago to work with Amos, Derick, Fred and Ray on the eZ components - it had the expected amount of snow. A few days later, there was nothing anymore. We had positive celsius values and the weather was really crappy... until Monday. Since then it has been snowing all the time and yesterday we left when it looked like this: - WI - [W]riteable checker for v[I]m Jakob Westhoff (one of my usergroup fellows) created a tiny but very efficient bash script to avoid a big annoyance: I'm using "sudo" on my work station to not have the need to completly switch to root for administrative tasks. Still I usually forget to type "sudo" when I intend to edit a file with is not writeable for my current user. I asume people with similar environments know that problem. WI ([W]riteable checker for v[I]m) wraps around VIM on startup and checks the file permissions. If you may not edit the file, WI asks you if you want to start VI through sudo or quit. - Geeky, stylish and... ultra slim! This morning I finally realized my plan, which I had in mind since I saw the announcement of it. I bought an iPod Nano. It's the first MP3 player I ever own and by now I'm really sure, it is worth it's price. After taking a reallife look at the Nano last week in San Francisco and digging into lots of testimonials and reviews last night I could not resist any longer. One quote from a review had burned into my mind, which sounded (not exactly) like "When I first saw the iPod Nano, I felt that this must be the ultimate iPod of the iPods...". - Lufthansa rulez! I'm actually sitting on my flight from SF to Munich, somewehere between California and Canada (I guess) and about 10000m above sea level... and I have a wifi connection! ;) It's the service I always dreamt of: For $29.- you get wireless access to the net on a flatrate basis. Actually, the latency is horribly bad (700ms for a ping in average), but hey, I don't want to play an ego shooter here, but just read my mails, some news and maybe work a bit. Now they have only to fix the last major problem: My notebook works only about 2.5 hours with the single battery... an AC would be like pearadise... Or I have to buy a second battery from IBM... - Do you hate modelines? I personally hated them for years now and never really managed to build one on my own or find satisfying information on the net (especially regarding widescreen resolutions). You know, XFree86/Xorg modelines really suck. Thanks to Matthias Hopf (who I met on Linuxtag) and Jakob Westhoff (who reminded me today) I now about the tool I ever wanted to have: $ gtf. :) - Leaving Norway again... Sadly I'll leave the eZ Systems headquarters in Norway tomorrow direction Dortmund again. It really was an amazing time for me in all aspects: Work, people, country and whatever else matters. - Open Source Spam? Chregu and me recently seemed to have received or first "open source spam" (never knew, such existed...) at Planet-PHP. The following email landed in our mailbox (names obfuscated): - Open Source Database Conference 2005 As some of you might have already realized, this conference is in parallel to the International PHP Conference and taking place in the same location. The schedule for the conf looks as follows:
