I personally hated them for years now and never really managed to build one on my own or find satisfying information on the net (especially regarding widescreen resolutions). You know, XFree86/Xorg modelines really suck. Thanks to Matthias Hopf (who I met on Linuxtag) and Jakob Westhoff (who reminded me today) I now about the tool I ever wanted to have: $ gtf. :) - How to make Linux out of your Windows It's been a long long time since I last posted in this category, but this link I received from Aaron is really funny: - Wahooo, I have Gentoo! :) Although I could not realize my plan to install Gentoo during the weekend (because I had to recover my server from a rootkit, but that's another, much more painful, story), I managed it by now. :) - Testing Gentoo Today I'll try out Gentoo Linux. Until now I used Debian on all of my machines. Of course, Debian stable (no more Woody, but now Sarge) is always for me the best choice for servers, but maybe Debian unstable is not the best solution for desktops and notebooks. I usually installed Knoppix on those kinds of machines, to get a preconfigured X and hardware recognition. Of course the initial installation works fine, but all further upgrades seem to break the system more and more, I think because of the customizations Knoppix has in respect to pure Debian. - I am Debian Linux I am Debian Linux - Debian rulez (about Widescreen and RSS) After my (not too ;) long vacation it felt great to run "apt-get update" and "apt-get dist-upgrade" on my notebook. And indeed, it's been worth it. - Why Bill hates Linux I recently got a scintillation, what Bill (the great Billy Boy) Gates hates most on Linux: - Skippy - or Expose for Gnome MacOS (especially X) is a very cool operating system in matters of usability and style. I like it very much, except it's only deficiencies: - I love Synaptics Realy, I do! After upgrading to Kernel 2.6.5 I experienced, that the tap and double tap (emulating click and double click) functionality did not work anymore with my standard PS/2 driver. A little google told me to use either a parameter for my actual driver or to use the Synaptics one... - The flavor of freedom II ... After having heard that there are no wifi crads available for rent at the International PHP Conference in Amsterdam, I decided to do what I ever wanted to do: I bought a card for WLAN. And as stood in front of the shelf in the store, I realized, that if I want to test the wireless freedom, I'd have to buy a WLAN router, too. And so it went...
