Tobias Schlitt - a passion for php

After my server was close to wasting all its CPU time for checking email messages for potential spam using Spamassassin I decided that it was time to investigate. My friend Arne, who helped me a lot with Qmail problems earlier, recommended to install spamdyk, an SMTP spam filter that is placed in front of Qmail and does not require specially patches for the MTA itself. Spamdyk can filter mail by blacklisting, whitelisting, greylisting and using several other options.

Thanks to Arne for this great tip! Spamdyk is up and running now on my maschine and my load is now constantly below 0.40, while spam receival seems to be reduced drastically. Since I did not find much information about Spamdyk on Gentoo, I wrote down my experiences as a little howto in the Gentoo wiki. Maybe someone finds it helpfull. Any feedback welcome!

When Sebastian left the Gentoo project, I decided to give it a try to become a Gentoo developer, which is a quite long process. Now I took the first step and provided new ebuilds for the recent eZ Components release 2006.2. Since I'm not an official developer, yet, these ebuilds are only available through the Gentoo PHP overlay, for now. I think Luca will put them into portage, or at least into php-testing, as soon as he is back from Christmas vacation.

So far, you can try them out through the php-experimental overlay. The easiest way is to use layman ($ emerge layman):

$ layman -a php-experimental
$ eix-sync || emerge --sync
$ emerge -av ezc-eZcomponents

Some feedback would be nice.

Sebastian announced that eZ components are now available in Gentoo's portage system. This adds one more posibility for you to install the components. So, we now have 3 methods in place (if you are a lucky Gentoo user), of which the new one is the most comfortable:

1. Portage:

Simply type $ emerge ezc-eZComponents as root and you will get everything you need (including PHP 5, if not setup, yet).

2. PEAR (also feasible for other systems):

Simply type $ pear install components.ez.no/eZComponents-beta (presumed, that you have PHP 5 in place and PEAR 1.4.x installed).

3. Download ZIP or TAR (also feasible for other systems):

We provide a ZIP and and a TAR.BZ2 archive for direct download, containing the components.
